Custom Stainless Steel Decontamination Installation

Barnsley Hospital (Sterile Services & Endoscopy)

The Need

Barnsley Hospital required bespoke stainless steel equipment for its decontamination and sterile services departments, including adjustable sinks and workstations that would support staff ergonomics, efficiency, and stringent infection control standards.
The existing infrastructure was outdated and did not fully support workflow requirements, hygiene practices, or ergonomic safety for staff working long shifts. As part of a planned refurbishment, the hospital team needed solutions that complied with contemporary clinical guidance and would deliver long-term durability in high-throughput clinical settings.

The Solution

Neocare worked directly with the hospital’s sterile services and endoscopy technicians through a consultative process — measuring onsite, refining specifications, and co-designing the solution to exact departmental needs.

Key elements of the delivered solution included:

  • Bespoke height-adjustable stainless steel sinks with a 350 mm range of adjustment, designed with ergonomic input to reduce lumbar and upper-limb strain during repetitive tasks.
  • Custom fabrication to fit awkward corners and specific spatial constraints, maximising floor space for staff movement and equipment placement.
  • Anti-microbial WRAS-approved flexi-hoses that suppress biofilm growth, enhancing infection control compared with standard EPDM hoses.
  • High-grade Marine 316 stainless steel construction with minimal weld inclusions and smooth surfaces to facilitate cleaning and longevity.
  • Practical details such as 300 mm splashbacks for spill containment and hygienic finishes to reduce contamination risk.

Throughout the project, Neocare’s team provided on-site adjustments and went beyond standard installation duties to ensure a seamless fit, even re-fitting a pass-through hatch where required to achieve the correct finish and performance.

The Outcome

The Neocare installation delivered tailored, high-quality stainless steel solutions that materially improved workflow, hygiene, and staff experience in both sterile services and endoscopy environments:

  • Improved ergonomics: Height-adjustable sinks significantly reduce musculoskeletal strain for technicians undertaking prolonged instrument processing tasks.
  • Enhanced infection control: Premium materials and antimicrobial components support compliance with HTM 04 guidance and reduce contamination risk during decontamination procedures.
  • Optimised workspace: Bespoke fabrication to fit the exact department footprint made full use of available space and supported efficient clinical workflows.
  • Long-term reliability: The hospital team highlighted the robust build quality and finish, noting that custom-built components were superior to previous solutions and expected to deliver many years of service life.

Staff feedback was highly positive, with technicians particularly valuing the adjustable sinks and the collaborative design approach that incorporated their input into the final solution.
