Custom Stainless Steel Solutions
University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust
Lancaster Royal Infirmary Endoscopy & Sterile Services
The Need
At Lancaster Royal Infirmary, part of the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, space and workflow efficiency were critical drivers for upgrading decontamination infrastructure in both endoscopy and sterile services. Staff frequently worked long shifts at fixed benches and sinks that did not accommodate varying user heights, contributing to discomfort and ergonomic strain. Additionally, with multiple types of endoscopes requiring careful handling, the trust needed a system to clearly organise manifold connections and tubing to protect delicate instruments and streamline reprocessing work. The department also required bespoke pass-through hatches and work surfaces that optimised a compact footprint without compromising hygiene or operational flow.
The Solution
Neocare partnered closely with the sterile services and decontamination team to design and manufacture a suite of bespoke stainless steel equipment tailored to the trust’s unique needs.
Key elements of the solution included:
- Height-adjustable sinks and tables with extended travel range and anti-glare finishes to support staff of all heights during prolonged instrument processing tasks.
- A purpose-built “hook-up organiser” — a custom rack to house AER (automated endoscope reprocessor) manifolds and tube assemblies for all endoscope types, equipped with a drip tray to manage excess fluid and prevent ingress into connections.
- Higher splashbacks to protect walls from splashes and support ease of cleaning.
- Flexible anti-microbial hoses for hot and cold water supplies, designed for infection control and durability.
- Custom pass-through hatches with interlocked doors, enhancing workflow segregation between contaminated and clean areas.
Where a measurement issue arose during installation — a DIN basket clearance mismatch — Neocare responded live on-site by manufacturing and installing a corrected sink at no extra cost, demonstrating commitment to performance and service.
The Outcome
The bespoke equipment delivered by Neocare significantly improved both user experience and operational efficiency within the decontamination and sterile services departments:
- Enhanced ergonomics and comfort: Adjustable sinks and tables reduced strain for staff working across long shifts, accommodating a wide range of user heights with ease.
- Improved workflow clarity: The custom manifold organiser simplified identification and connection of complex endoscope assemblies, reducing the risk of error and instrument damage.
- Infection control and hygiene: Higher splashbacks, anti-glare finishes, and anti-microbial components supported cleaner surfaces and reduced visual fatigue, enabling easier cleaning and safer reprocessing workflows.
- Space optimisation: Narrower footprint workstations and tables created additional room for staff movement in a compact space without sacrificing functionality.
- User satisfaction: Staff feedback was highly positive, with teams reporting greater comfort and improved utility compared with previous fixed, non-adjustable equipment.
